Working Together

Our plastic surgeons are experts in current techniques such as free-tissue transfer, microsurgical procedures and craniofacial surgery. They work closely with medical center physicians, as well as cancer specialists at the nearby Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. This proximity helps us provide coordinated patient care, and makes it possible to include plastic and reconstructive procedures during other necessary surgeries, when appropriate.

Burns and Traumas

Burns and traumas are challenging injuries, and their impact can be painful both physically and emotionally. Our plastic surgeons work as a team with physicians at the UC Irvine Regional Burn Center and Trauma/Critical Care Division to heal and repair damage as early as possible.

Image Enhancement and Support Center

Founded by The Associates, a UC Irvine Medical Center support group, the Image Enhancement and Support Center is staffed by volunteers skilled in helping patients with their appearance during treatment and recovery.

Patients receive a free, private image consultation in a friendly, comfortable setting.  Assistance is provided to men and women with appearance-related effects of cancer treatment, burn or traumatic injuries, craniofacial reconstruction, lupus and scleroderma. Prosthetic products, wigs, cosmetics, clothing and other items are available at a nominal cost.  Consultants help with selection, fittings, and special corrective techniques that can help patients enhance their image and increase their social confidence.

Plastic Surgery Research

Researchers at UC Irvine Medical Center are developing alternative tissue replacement strategies to prevent the need for harvesting donor tissues during reconstruction. Areas of interest include the development of nerve conduits for peripheral nerve surgery. A wide variety of clinical trials are ongoing, including fibrin sealant glue for wounds, cultured epithelium for skin grafts, and non-contact ultrasound for determining the depth of burns.
