The UC Irvine Regional Burn Center was among the first burn care facilities
established in the nation. Over the years, it has grown in stature and reputation
due to the number of patients served annually and the active research program
maintained at the center. Each year, we treat more than 600 patients--one-third of
them children---for severe burns caused by fire, chemicals, electricity or abrasions.

Multidisciplinary Team Approach
The immediate goal in treating burn survivors is the prevention of complications such as
organ dysfunction, malnutrition or shock. The burn team includes many of the nation’s
most respected and highly trained experts in the field. Our surgeons, critical care physicians,
nurses, pulmonologists and infectious disease specialists have the clinical expertise to address
these challenges, as well as other medical concerns. In addition, skilled occupational and
physical therapists, dietitians, psychologists and social workers assist burn survivors throughout
their rehabilitation and recovery.
Pediatric intensive care physicians oversee the treatment of children admitted to the burn
center. Staff nurses have also received extensive pediatric training in this highly specialized
area of burn care. A play therapist is available to help children adjust physically and
psychologically to special concerns that may result from their injuries.
All burn team members are dedicated to achieving complete physical and emotional healing for
patients.
Highest Quality Care
The UC Irvine Regional Burn Center is verified by the American College of Surgeons and
the American Burn Association. This means our center meets rigorous criteria for treatment
capabilities and performance, resulting in the highest quality patient care.
Comprehensive Approach
Our goal is to treat and heal patients during the shortest possible inpatient stay,
followed by outpatient therapy. The UC Irvine Regional Burn Center has consistently received
recognition from the international medical community as a leader in all aspects of burn care,
including the critically important area of pain control. Techniques are constantly being
refined to help patients recover quickly and comfortably.
A Leading Innovator
The UC Irvine Regional Burn Center maintains an extensive ongoing research program to
develop new technology and treatment techniques. Because of our worldwide standing in
trauma/critical care medicine and burn care, UC Irvine Medical Center offers patients many
breakthrough therapies and treatments unavailable elsewhere.
One of the many significant accomplishments of UC Irvine researchers was the development
of BioBrane®, a synthetic material that serves as a temporary skin substitute.
In addition, our researchers enhanced burn treatment through the use of cadaver skin
and immunosuppression techniques. Most recently, the center received national recognition
for the development of a device that uses ultrasound to determine the depth and severity of
burns without having to touch a critically injured patient.
Community Outreach
UC Irvine Medical Center works with the Orange County Burn Association to provide a burn
recovery group for patients, their families and friends. In an ongoing effort to educate
other medical professionals about the highly specialized area of burn care, we also offer
Advanced Burn Life Support classes.
