Radiation Oncology Conditions and services

Main | Overview | Team & Expertise | Our Physicians | Conditions & Services

UC Irvine’s radiation oncology team provides consultation and treatment for patients with a confirmed or suspected malignancy. We also treat benign conditions for which radiation treatment is a therapeutic option.

Using the latest technology, like the RapidArc™ radiaotherapy system shown above, we can treat tumors in virtually any part of the body. These include:

•Breast cancer
•Gynecological cancer
•Tumors of the brain and central nervous system
•Head and neck tumors
•Gynecological
•Lung cancers
•Gastric cancer
•Melanoma
•Thoracic cancers

Cancers can be treated with a variety of targeted radiation technologies, which include high-energy X-ray and electron beams. Where appropriate, our radiation oncology group also performs advanced brachytherapy, in which radioactive sources are implanted internally to destroy the cancer where it grows.

The computer image at left shows tiny needles conveying radiation into a tumor. At right, an X-ray image shows the treatment area.

Our team tailors the radiation dose to conform to the exact shape of a patient’s tumor. This targets the dose only to the affected area, minimizing exposure to healthy tissue, reducing the risk of side effects and improving clinical outcomes.

Our treatment services include:

•Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
•Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
•RapidArc™ volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT)
•Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (CRT)
•MammoSite® targeted radiation therapy
•Frame-based and frameless stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT)
•SIR-Spheres® microsphere therapy
•Therasphere micro-sphere therapy
•High-dose and low-dose brachytherapy
•Optical tracking
