Radiation Oncology Services Overview

Main | Overview | Team & Expertise | Our Physicians | Conditions & Services

UC Irvine Healthcare’s nationally recognized radiation oncology services team provides comprehensive, leading-edge diagnosis, treatment and seamless care to patients and families coping with brain, breast, cervical, prostate and other cancers.

Located in the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Orange County, the radiation oncology team offers wide-ranging clinical services as well as extensive research and community education programs. UC Irvine is the only facility in Orange County to use RapidArc™ radiotherapy, a groundbreaking method of delivering powerful, highly directed radiation that is faster and more precise than conventional radiotherapy.

Advances in technology and a better understanding of radiation’s effects on the body have made radiation oncology a key component in cancer treatment. About 50 percent of patients diagnosed with cancer will receive curative, adjuvant or a palliative radiation treatment externally and/or internally.

Other state-of-the-art external treatments include intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Our specialists also provide internal radiation treatment, known as brachytherapy, using high as well as low dose-rate radioactive sources.

Our team, which includes radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, medical dosimetrists and other specialists, works closely with other physicians to ensure that a patient’s treatment and care are superior, efficient, compassionate and comfortable.
