team and Clinical expertiseMain | Overview | Team & Expertise | Our Physicians | Conditions & Services UC Irvine Healthcare has the only nationally recognized radiation oncology team in Orange County at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange. Our radiation oncologists are part of a multidisciplinary team of specialists with advanced clinical expertise in the latest therapies. At Orange County’s only university medical center, these physicians work in concert with medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists and oncology nurses to ensure that treatments are precisely planned and delivered for maximum efficacy and in the most compassionate manner. Radiation Oncologists Radiation oncologists are board-certified physicians with advanced training and experience in the safe and effective delivery of therapeutic radiation, sparing normal tissue while delivering the highest possible dose to the tumor. Medical Physicists Dosimetrists Our board-certified dosimetrists calculate the dose and distribution of radiation needed for each patient. They develop a number of complex treatment plans that can best destroy the tumor while sparing normal tissues. Working in concert with a patient’s physicians and the medical physicist, dosimetrists help select the most effective course of therapy. Radiation Therapists Radiation therapists are highly skilled, board-certified members of the cancer management team. They are responsible for accurately recording, interpreting and administering the treatment prescribed by radiation oncologists. During treatment, therapists help physicians use fluoroscopy, X-ray films or CT scans to localize and outline anatomical areas to be treated. Radiation Oncology Nurses Radiation oncology nurses have specialized training and expertise in the physical, psychological, social and educational needs of patients receiving radiation therapy. As integral members of the healthcare team, our nurses collaborate with the radiation oncologist, radiation therapist and other radiotherapy staff to coordinate treatment and ensure the quality and continuity of patient care. They also work with patients and their families, providing education and counseling on symptom management and related issues. |
