Breast Cancer Services

Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to successfully fighting breast cancer.  The physicians at UC Irvine Medical Center are at the forefront of detecting and treating the disease at the earliest possible stages. Our multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, researchers, nurses, social workers and other skilled health professionals.

Central Location

Breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment are all provided at the Breast Health Center, part of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.  This facility offers patients the benefits of coordinated care. Our under-one-roof approach to service simplifies the diagnostic and treatment process for patients, because less time is spent traveling to different appointments.

Having radiation oncology, hematology/oncology and surgical oncology services all in one location also helps our medical team.  Being located in the same facility makes it easier for them to develop an optimal, individualized treatment plan for each patient.

Screening and Diagnosis

The Breast Health Center offers patients access to leading-edge methods of cancer screening that make diagnosis easier and more accurate.  Some of our advanced technologies include whole breast automated ultrasound scanning, digital mammography and breast MRI.  These imaging techniques can help doctors evaluate dense breast tissue and detect tumors that might be missed by conventional mammography.

Patients also benefit from minimally invasive methods such as stereotactic biopsy and ultrasound-guided biopsy, which provide accurate diagnoses while reducing trauma to the breast. We also provide special screening programs for women with a family history of breast cancer.

Advanced Treatments

Today, new chemotherapy drugs and combinations are being tested that can shrink tumors, improve therapeutic drug delivery and reduce the need for radical surgery.  As part of a university medical center with an active clinical trial program, the Breast Health Center can provide women with access to novel treatments years before they are widely available.

In addition, we are sensitive to women’s aesthetic concerns.  Wherever possible, we practice breast-conserving oncoplastic techniques that combine cancer surgery with plastic surgery for optimum results.
