PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY PROGRAM
The goal of the UC Irvine Heart Disease Prevention Program is to identify people at risk for cardiovascular disease and help them reverse or stabilize their condition through education, lifestyle changes and/or medical therapies.
Multidisciplinary staff
Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of health care providers, the program is designed for people concerned about initial or recurrent heart problems. Assessments are conducted by cardiologists, cardiac nurse specialists, dietitians, exercise physiologists and others.

Comprehensive evaluations
An evaluation of coronary risk factors consists of:
- A physical examination
- Nutritional assessment
- Fitness consultation
- Lab tests
- EKG
- Other screenings as needed
- One-on-one consultation
- Follow-up
Among the many factors our cardiology team considers are the identification and management of hypertension and lipid disorders. The results of the evaluation are compiled into a detailed report. It includes test outcomes and individualized recommendations to decrease the patient’s risk of coronary artery disease and stroke. The report is presented during a one-on-one session with the patient.
Counseling and support
Both individualized and group counseling are available following the assessment if the patient desires. The Heart Disease Prevention Program participates in several major national studies, adding to the body of knowledge about the effects of early detection on cardiovascular disease.
