Causes
Infertility in men may be caused by many factors. Among them are congenital conditions,
hormonal deficiencies, or blockages of sperm transport due to injury or infection. Other factors
may also be involved, including the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation treatments, as well
as toxic and environmental exposures.
One common cause of infertility is the formation of varicose veins in the testicle, called
varicoceles. These have been shown to lower sperm production in 40 percent of men diagnosed with
fertility problems. Our urology team uses the latest techniques to diagnose the cause and rule out
other underlying conditions that can mimic infertility.
Treatments
At UC Irvine, microsurgical techniques are used to treat varicoceles, as well as reverse previous
vasectomies. Minimally invasive sperm retrieval surgery can be performed in tandem with assisted
reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization and introcytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI).
Other conditions affecting men such as erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels are regularly
treated at the Center for Urological Care. Our surgeons are also experts in performing no-incision vasectomies.
