Emergency Medicine Services
Emergency Medicine is the first line of care for many patients, from minor emergencies
including cuts and bruises, to patients with the most critical conditions and
illnesses, including stroke, heart attack and car accidents. Emergency Medicine
operates one of the nine designated comprehensive emergency rooms in California
– which serves Orange County and surrounding communities 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. UC Irvine Medical Center’s emergency room provides Orange County
comprehensive services to address urgent and emergent medical needs.
Emergency Medicine’s multidisciplinary team manages minor conditions as well as some of
the most serious illnesses and injuries, including:
- Burns
- Bruises
- Cuts
- Fever
- Older adult concerns
- Pregnancy and female problems
- Heart attack
- Major injuries
- Pediatric emergencies
- Rashes
- Stroke

Medical Services
- Immediate state-of-the-art diagnostic services as needed, including CT scan,
MRI, ultrasound.
- Rapid response teams to mobilize the proper specialists to the bedside in the
emergency room for conditions including heart attack, brain attack, trauma
(injury) and burns. We are a Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke
Center, and an Orange County Emergency Medical Services-designated Cardiac
Receiving Center, with 24 hour cardiac catheterization capability for heart
attacks.
- Special expertise in the acute treatment of behavioral emergencies, as well
as specialists in poisonings and overdoses.
Trauma Services
UC Irvine Medical Center has the only Level I Trauma Center in Orange County, providing
the most comprehensive treatment of life-threatening injuries. It is fully
verified as an Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of
Surgeons, and all trauma surgeons are fellowship trained and board certified. In
addition, we are the entry point of the only Burn Center in Orange County
verified by the American College of Surgeons.

Not only do we provide expert physician evaluation and state-of-the-art laboratory
testing and imaging (CT, ultrasound, MRI), but the emergency room at UC Irvine
Medical Center also has access to specialists from 23 disciplines 24 hours a
day. This capability and response is unmatched by community hospitals.
