This includes infections, diseases and disorders of the nose, ears, mouth, throat, face, larynx (voice box), sinuses, tracheobronchial tree, esophagus and skull base as well as thyroid, parathyroid and salivary glands.

UC Irvine physicians performed the first robotic thyroid surgery on the West Coast.
Our specialists include fellowship-trained experts in head and neck cancer surgery, robot-assisted thyroidectomy, voice disorders and laryngeal cancer, facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, sinus diseases, hearing and balance disorders. Physicians who treat such patients are otolaryngologists. They also are often called ear, nose and throat doctors, or ENTs.

Services
Our otolaryngologists not only treat common disorders affecting the ear, nose and throat, they also typically have completed extra training in one of several subspecialty areas, including:
- Laryngology, which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of voice, speech and swallowing problems. This includes diseases of the larynx (voice box) and esophagus, such as spasmodic dysphonia and chronic hoarseness. UC Irvine’s Center for Voice and Speech Disorders offers a state-of-the-art setting for patients with voice and speech problems to be evaluated and receive training from speech therapists.
- Head and neck surgery, including procedures for patients with benign and cancerous tumors and other conditions affecting the throat, head, neck and skull base.
- Robotic thyroidectomy for patients with benign or cancerous tumors of the thyroid.
- Pediatric otolaryngology, which involves treating children with congenital abnormalities, developmental anomalies, infections and trauma-related conditions. Examples are otitis media (middle ear infection), hearing and balance disorders, snoring and sleep apnea, allergies, sinus infections, voice disorders and facial birthmarks known as hemangiomas.
- Rhinology, which treats diseases, disorders, structural abnormalities and allergies affecting the nose and sinuses. Examples include chronic sinusitis, deviated nasal septa and allergies.
- Otolaryngic allergy care, which treats sensitivities that cause nasal and sinus problems such as rhinitis and sinusitis. Diagnosis involves obtaining a precise history and guided testing for allergies. Treatment can include medication, avoidance of allergy triggers, gamma globulin therapy and immunosuppressive therapy (allergy shots). Otolaryngic allergists also diagnose and treat asthma.
- Otology/neurotology, which is involves diseases and disorders of the ear, temporal bone and auditory and facial nerves. This includes hearing loss, tinnitus (ear noise), balance disorders, facial paralysis and many related conditions. Our otologists offer conventional hearing aids, cochlear implants, other types of implantable hearing aids and leading-edge solutions for hearing impairment. They are also experts in diagnosing and treating dizziness and vertigo.
- Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, which helps patients with aesthetic or reconstructive concerns due to trauma, congenital malformations, malignancies and aging. Procedures offered range from cosmetic operations such as facelifts and rhinoplasties (reshaping or resizing the nose) to the use of injectible fillers and paralytic agents (Botox®) as well as extensive facial reconstruction after an accident or cancer surgery.
- Sleep medicine, which includes the evaluation and treatment of people experiencing excessive snoring, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and other sleep-related problems.
