Health Education EventsCost: Many classes are free to patients, UC Irvine employees and volunteers. $20.00 / non-UC Irvine patients. There are charges for American Heart Association Classes, Balance and Mobility for Seniors, Pilates and Meditation programs. Certain programs are also available in Spanish. Parking information for 200 S. Manchester Ave, Orange. When you arrive let the Security Officer at the reception desk in the 1st floor lobby know the patient parking stall number that you are parked in as well as the description of your car. Parenting Series for Children with ADHD/ADDClick here for course description and more information. Asthma and Adults (One Session)Learn how to control asthma and not have asthma control you! This class includes an overview of what is asthma, what are asthma triggers and how to identify them, best treatment options, prevention of episodes, psychosocial considerations and available resources. A free peak flow meter will be given to each registered participant.
Location, Cost and Registration Attention and Behavior Problems (10 Sessions) (Spanish)Support and education for parents of children ages 3-5 with attention and behavior problems offered through a joint project of UC Irvine and Children's Hospital of Orange County. Balance and Mobility for Seniors (16 Sessions)A class that helps you stay on your feet.
Taught by a licensed Occupational Therapist, this fun program is
designed to improve balance and mobility and reduce the risk of falls.
Also focuses on flexibility, strength and endurance. Participants must
be medically stable senior adults who live independently and can walk at
least 200 feet safely without the use of any assisted devices. There are 2 evaluation sessions which will be held at UC Irvine Manchester Pavilion, 200 S. Manchester Ave., suite 840, Orange.
Cost: $80. ($40 for Senior Club members) Includes evaluation. Wear
comfortable clothes. After being approved to join the program, the series consists of 16 one-hour sessions. First Set of Evaluations will be held 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Second Set of Classes, 16 Session Series 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Breastfeeding (One Session) (English and Spanish)For expectant mothers and their birth partners in the last trimester of pregnancy. Discussion includes process of milk production, how to breastfeed, avoiding potential problems and returning to work.

Diabetic Diet (One Session)This class discusses nutrition as a major factor of diabetes management. Topics include food choices, portions and how they affect diabetes, eating the foods you enjoy, whether you are at home or away, while following diabetic guidelines to keep your blood sugar levels at the healthiest range possible. Available resources will be given.
Classes in English will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. Diabetes Overview (One Session)This class provides information for the management of diabetes. Topics to be discussed include defining diabetes, methods to control blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, medication and lifestyle changes in order to prevent long-term complications. A free glucometer will be given to each registered participant.

Diabetes Management Series (Four Sessions)The goal of this program is to help people with Diabetes and their families understand the disease and the necessary steps to manage it. Topics include the disease process, acute and long-term complications, diet and meal planning, exercise, medications, monitoring your blood sugar levels and lifestyle changes to promote good health and prevent long-term complications. A free glucometer will be given to each registered participant. We encourage you to attend all four sessions, but each session may be attended individually.
Cost: Free to patients, $80.00 / non-UC Irvine
patients Early Pregnancy (One Session)For expectant mothers and their birth partners in the first three to four months of pregnancy, but can be attended later in the pregnancy if necessary. Nutrition changes during pregnancy, relief of common discomforts, exercise, prenatal care, warning signs and car safety will be discussed.

Heart Healthy Diet (One Session)This class discusses the link between heart disease and diet, including the "good" vs. "bad" lipids. Topics include American Heart Association nutrition recommended guidelines for low fat, low cholesterol, and low sodium diets. This class also discusses how to eat "real" food to maintain heart health.

4 - 6 p.m. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) Management (One Session)High blood pressure has been called "the Silent Killer" because you don't always feel sick when you have it. This class explains what high blood pressure is and how to control high blood pressure through medications, diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. Strategies to lower your numbers will be discussed. Living Well With Heart Failure (One Session)This class provides information for the management of congestive heart failure. Topics to be discussed include overview of heart failure, symptoms to be aware of, basic lifestyle changes to manage the condition through activities, diet, exercise, medications and resources.

1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Maternity Tea & TourWomen's Health Services at UC Irvine Medical Center invites you to learn more about its maternity services and tour the UC Irvine Maternity Unit. We combine a caring approach toward pregnancy and childbirth with comprehensive obstetrical services.

Maternity Tea & Tours held from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Meditation for Health Series (4-Week Series)This class will introduce the art of meditation to participants while discussing the various types and styles of meditation. This program will help participants learn how meditation can help to promote good health and a better quality of life. This is spiritual in direction, not religious, and no special clothing or equipment is required.

Meditation Special Topic (One Session)Tea Ceremony Transforms the ordinary act of drinking tea into a special experience. It becomes a social, communal activity with an element of graceful beauty and a spiritual dimension. It is of benefit to people of different cultures and all nations. The history of tea ceremonies, etiquette for guests, and types of tea will be included. We invite you to come and participate in the shared activity of drinking a soothing cup of tea, slowly and meditatively. You will relax and smile as you come to know what it means to be “one with the tea.” Limited to 8 participants Cost: $30/participant Meditation Special Topic (One Session)Body Scan Body Scan is a method of meditation that teaches us to bring awareness to each part of our body in sequence. Body Scan has become popular in health care settings as an affordable alternative care method to help relieve short-term and chronic pain, promote relaxation, and facilitate stress relief using visualization. Experience the technique of Body Scan and learn to continue the practice at home. It is easy to learn through a guided visualization and can improve energy and enthusiasm for life. Suitable for the physically disabled. Cost: $20/participant
Newborn Care (English and Spanish)For expectant mothers in the last trimester of pregnancy and their birth partners. Includes infant feeding, dressing, bathing, diapering and symptoms of illness.
