When it isn't Alzheimer's Disease, It May be Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NHP) is an excessive buildup of fluid in the brain that occurs most often in people over the age of 55. The symptoms of NPH are often mistaken for Alzheimer's Disease and may include memory loss, difficulties in reasoning and problem solving, and mild dementia. Other symptoms include urinary incontinence and difficulty walking, and may be mistaken for Parkinson's Disease. UC Irvine neurosurgeon Dr. Laura Paré will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of NPH and the current research being done to manage this condition.

Dr. Paré is the medical director of the General Neurosurgery Ambulatory Clinic at UC Irvine Medical Center. Her office is located at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

In fact, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) about 1 in 3 Americans between the ages of 65 and 75 has a hearing loss that can have a major impact on physical, social and emotional well-being. The good news, however, is that there are ways to compensate for age-related hearing loss.

Dr. Hamid Djalilian will discuss the causes of hearing loss and the strategies to help people hear and communicate more easily, including the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. He will also provide information on what is new in current research.

Dr. Sehgal will discuss the idea of memory loss and aging and provide tips on keeping you brain fit and memory sharp.

Dr. Sehgal is board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics. She is also an Assistant Professor in the UC Irvine Department of Internal Medicine, Geriatrics Division.
