Community EventsIs It Just Forgetfulness or Something More? Some forgetfulness is often considered a normal part of aging. It’s probably normal to temporarily forget a neighbor’s name or don’t remember where you put your checkbook or the car keys. But how can you distinguish between age-related forgetfulness and the signs of something more serious like the memory loss and confusion associated with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia? Dr. Franklin will discuss the idea of memory loss and aging, the different types of dementia and what happens as dementia progresses. He will also provide tips on keeping your brain fit and memory sharp. Dr. Franklin is a neuropsychologist and an assistant clinical professor in the UC Irvine Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. His clinical interests include evaluation of dementia and cognitive impairments for multiple neurological disorders as well as evaluating traumatic brain injuries and concussions. Osteoporosis An estimated 55 percent of people over age 50 have osteoporosis or low bone density. This puts them at an increased risk for fracture and disability. Various medications and recommendations are available for prevention, detection and treatment. Dr. Torabzadeh is board certified in geriatrics and internal medicine. Her office is located at Gottschalk Medical Plaza on the campus of the University of California, Irvine. Hearing Loss - Detection, Diagnoisis and intervention For most people, hearing loss comes with aging. In fact, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), an estimated 1 in 3 Americans between the ages of 65 and 75 has a hearing loss that can have a major impact on physical, social and emotional well-being. The good news, however, is that there are ways to compensate for age-related hearing loss. Dr. Hamid Djalilian will discuss the causes of hearing loss and the strategies to help people hear and communicate more easily, including the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. He will also provide information about the latest research and technology. Dr. Djalilian is a board certified otolaryngologist with a specialty in neurotology and skull based surgery. His office is located at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. Natural Compounds for the Treament of Alzheimer's Disease Recent evidence suggests that some natural compounds may enhance memory. Dr. Schreiber will describe current work at UC Irvine showing that two natural compounds, one an extract from a Chinese herb, the other vitamin B3, improve learning and memory in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Schreiber will also include a description of an ongoing clinical trial to determine the effects of vitamin B3 in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Breast Cancer Update Dr. Lane is a breast cancer surgeon whose office is located in the UC Irvine Breast Health Center, a part of the Chao Family Comprehensive Center, at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. Stroke Prevention A stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack,” occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain bursts or is blocked. Without blood and the oxygen it carries, brain cells begin to die and the part of the body that is controlled by the damaged area cannot work properly. Because brain damage can occur within minutes, it is important to know the symptoms of stroke and to get help quickly. Join Dr. Jain as he discusses what causes stroke, how to recognize stroke symptoms, and how to prevent brain attacks. He will also discuss the latest medical advances in stroke prevention and intervention. |
