The neurologists at UC Irvine Medical Center offer comprehensive, compassionate,
world-class care for the entire spectrum of neurological disorders.
Expert team
Because disorders of the nervous system are comparatively complex, they require a
team of experts to ensure their proper diagnosis and treatment. Patients at UC
Irvine Medical Center are cared for by a group of board-certified medical professionals
including neurologists, neurosurgeons and intensivists (critical care experts).
These specialists are supported by a team of nurses and other allied health professionals
in their mission to provide patients with leading-edge neurological services.

As Orange County’s only JCAHO-certified primary stroke center, our Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center offers state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment services for patients with stroke and other diseases affecting the blood vessels that supply the brain. Patients who have experienced an acute stroke are rapidly assessed, considered for thrombolytic (clot-busting) therapy, and treated using stroke care pathways, which are protocols proven to provide the best outcomes.
Comprehensive Epilepsy Program
The UC Irvine Medical Center Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is the only university-based program in Orange County serving patients who experience seizures. The latest procedures and therapies are used to diagnose and treat children and adults with epilepsy, particularly those whose seizures resist standard treatments. Patients undergo a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, including simultaneous EEG and video monitoring of seizures.
Multiple Sclerosis Program
The UC Irvine Medical Center Multiple Sclerosis Program provides the latest
in advanced diagnostics and therapeutics for multiple sclerosis (MS), which is
believed to be an autoimmune disease. MS affects the central nervous system,
including the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Our physicians have several
treatment options to offer MS patients, including disease-modifying therapies that may:
- Reduce the frequency and severity of relapses
- Reduce the numbers of brain lesions
- Possibly reduce future disability problems
Movement Disorders Program
Our Movement Disorders Program offers sophisticated diagnostic and treatment services
for Parkinson’s disease, tremor and other movement disorders. Patients at UC Irvine
Medical Center have access to the newest, most advanced therapies available, such as deep
brain stimulation.
Neuromuscular Program
The UC Irvine Medical Center Neuromuscular Program offers state-of-the-art treatments
for patients with nerve, muscle and neuromuscular junction disorders including diabetic
peripheral neuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis and amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Center for Sleep Medicine
Our Center for Sleep Medicine physicians specialize in problems such as sleep apnea,
narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and insomnia. We are staffed and equipped to test
for and identify these sleep-related disorders, as well as help patients find practical
solutions to their sleep problems.
Vestibular Disorders Program
The Vestibular Disorders Program treats patients with vertigo, sensations of
lightheadedness, loss of balance and coordination problems. Services include
evaluation by a board-certified neurologist with advanced training in these problems,
and testing inner ear hearing and balance functions. We can also assess whether
a neurological disorder is the cause of a patient’s dizziness.
Headache Program
Headache is the most common problem that brings people to see a neurologist. Our
Headache Program offers comprehensive evaluations and treatments for migraine,
tension headache and other forms of head pain.
Neuro-ophthalmology Program
The Neuro-ophthalmology Program at UC Irvine Medical Center provides comprehensive
diagnostic consultation and management for patients with vision loss or diplopia (double
vision) due to problems of the optic nerve and ocular motor nerves, as well as orbital
(eye socket) or intracranial (brain) disorders.
Research and emerging therapies
Physicians at UC Irvine Medical Center are active in many areas of basic and clinical research related to neurological problems, including stroke, epilepsy, brain aging, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, spinal cord injury and MS. Modalities being investigated include advances in neurosurgery as well as new drug and stem cell therapies. Through participation in clinical trials, our patients can gain access to promising new treatments and technologies.
