NEW UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FACT SHEET

University of California, Irvine Healthcare is constructing a state-of-the-art hospital at UC Irvine Medical Center, located in Orange, California. The new university hospital will replace a structure built in 1960 and link to an existing building devoted to patient care. Once completed, the new hospital will house the latest medical technologies and strengthen UC Irvine Healthcare’s ability to provide patients with the latest therapies and treatments.

Patients visiting the new university hospital will experience a spacious environment with private rooms designed for optimal comfort and healing. UC Irvine Healthcare is committed to providing high-quality patient care and fostering medical breakthroughs through research and education.

Site Location

The new hospital is visible from the Santa Ana I-5 and Garden Grove SR-22 freeways and located on the north side of the medical center campus, parallel to Chapman Ave. The main entrance faces south.

Timeline:

Construction began in February 2005. Expected completion is late 2008.

Budget:

$427 million (including equipment)

Hospital Facts:

  • Largest construction job in Orange County
  • 482,428 square feet
  • 7 stories (plus basement)
  • 191 beds, bringing the total number of beds to 377, including 102 beds in Building 1A Tower and 84 beds in the Neuropsychiatric Center
  • 30-bed neonatal intensive care unit
  • 15 high-tech operating rooms that are 50 percent larger than those currently in use
  • Two dedicated cardiac catheterization lab suites
  • Conference rooms and work spaces for residents on each patient-care floor
  • Areas reserved for future expansion, including 25,000 square feet for a new imaging center

Hospital Layout:

  • Ground Level (admitting and nurse staffing office, pharmacy, inpatient diagnostics, central sterile supply, materiel management, cafeteria, gift shop, main lobby)
  • Level Two (operating rooms, pre-operative and recovery rooms, catheterization labs and a bridge to Building 1A Tower)
  • Level Three (blood bank and rapid response laboratories)
  • Level Four (pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, general pediatrics)
  • Levels Five to Seven (adult intensive care, UC Irvine Regional Burn Center, General Clinical Research Center, medical/surgical units)
