UC Irvine Medical Center offers a full range of obstetric services, from pre-pregnancy
genetic testing and planning through postpartum care for mother and baby. Our capabilities
encompass not only general obstetrics, but also specialized treatment for high-risk pregnancies
and babies born with medical conditions that require more intensive care.
We provide a nurturing and caring environment for our patients and their families because
we know that the birth of a baby is one of life’s most important events. To help women
and their partners prepare for the arrival of their baby, our nurse educators offer prenatal classes that address the physical, social and emotional aspects of
childbirth. It’s our hope that we can make the birth experience something our patients
will remember with joy in the years to come.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork
Our staff comprises board-certified physician specialists in obstetrics, perinatology
(high-risk pregnancy), neonatology (high-risk newborns) and human genetics, as well as
specially trained and licensed/certified nurses, technologists, therapists and other team
members. An emphasis on coordination of care throughout the maternity process helps ensure
that patients receive services among the best in the region.
State-of-the-Art Technology
As a university medical center with a strong focus on research, we are committed to
offering patients the latest technologies, tests and treatments. We have pioneered two
tests used to determine a woman’s risk for premature labor and have been the first in
the nation to adopt other breakthroughs that safeguard the health of both mother and baby.
As genetic testing grows in precision and scope, we stand at the forefront of these
developments. We also offer patients the best new procedures in other areas of obstetrics,
as well as enhancements and refinements of existing procedures.
Specialized Facilities
In addition to cutting-edge research and technology, we provide patient care units
tailored to the special needs of mothers-to-be. Our high-risk maternity unit provides constant
monitoring and a low nurse-to-patient ratio. Private birthing suites combine comfort and
functionality to make the childbirth experience as pleasant and safe as possible. In addition
to our regular newborn nursery, we have a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that is licensed
to meet the needs of the smallest and sickest newborns.
UC Irvine Medical Center provides the only combined tertiary level perinatal and neonatal
program in Orange County to manage the high-risk pregnancy or the at-risk fetus.
