PEDIATRIC SERVICES

An exciting new era in pediatric care has begun.

University of California, Irvine and CHOC Children’s have formed a strategic partnership to better serve the children and families of Orange County and beyond. Approved by the Regents of the University of California and the CHOC Board of Directors, this affiliation will create a world-class pediatrics center that integrates high-quality, comprehensive patient care; leading-edge research; and exemplary teaching programs, contributing to a more efficient healthcare system.

UC Irvine Medical Center will continue to provide pediatric emergency services, burn care, trauma services, neonatal intensive care, newborn nursery care, and child and adolescent psychiatry, while CHOC will provide inpatient and outpatient specialty care to patients. Although UC Irvine and CHOC will remain separate institutions, this affiliation is the result of an ongoing partnership between the two institutions to improve the region’s pediatric care.

UC Irvine and CHOC are currently working on a comprehensive transition process, including patient placement. In February, UC Irvine Medical Center closed its general pediatric department unit. In March, selected UC Irvine pediatric subspeciality physician practices will relocate to CHOC.

Transition of Care

The UC Irvine/CHOC Children’s affiliation will result in the following changes in patient care services:

  • A large majority of UC Irvine pediatric subspecialty ambulatory care services will move to the CHOC campus effective March 2, 2009.
  • UC Irvine primary care services will remain at UC Irvine community clinics in Anaheim and Santa Ana, as well as at Gottschalk Medical Plaza in Irvine.
  • UC Irvine Medical Center will continue to offer neonatal intensive care, as well as newborn nursery services.
  • UC Irvine Medical Center emergency room will continue to treat all incoming trauma and non-trauma patients. However, the medical center is no longer admitting non-trauma general pediatric patients.
  • Non-trauma general pediatric patients will be treated, stabilized and if admission is necessary, patients will be admitted to CHOC.
  • UC Irvine Medical Center will continue to provide inpatient treatment to trauma, burn and psychiatric patients, as well as, renal transplant patients.

Physicians who have moved to CHOC will have their new address and phone number listed on their Find a Doctor bios.

Training the next generation of physicians

In an effort that has already yielded success, UC Irvine and CHOC will continue to collaborate on recruiting the nation’s best and brightest pediatric specialists, while retaining pediatric experts already on staff at UC Irvine and CHOC. We will also integrate our pediatric residency programs, enhancing patient care and providing a more comprehensive environment to train high-quality pediatricians. Through the alignment of our research programs, we will be able to offer our patients even more pediatric clinical trials and comprehensive treatment options, providing more hope to children and families.
