Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by an inability to sustain fluency of speech. The disorder affects nearly 3 million Americans, or 1 percent of the population. There is no cure for stuttering; but symptoms of the disorder can be reduced through medical treatment.

Kirkup Center for the Medical Treatment of Stuttering at UC Irvine is the first center in the world dedicated to improving speech fluency through the latest scientific research and medical advancements. The mission of the center is to provide children, adolescents, and adults who stutter the latest medical treatments for stuttering; conduct innovative research in the medical aspects of stuttering and to train medical professionals in the compassionate treatment of the disorder.
