When Hilda Castuera-Tashiro decided to volunteer for an organization, she immediately thought of UC Irvine Medical Center. As a long-time resident of nearby Garden Grove and the mother of a UC Irvine graduate, Hilda has known about UC Irvine Medical Center for many years.

Hilda read the descriptions for volunteer opportunities at the medical center and felt that volunteering at the information desk was a good fit with her skills and interests.

“Since I’m bilingual, I felt the best place for me to volunteer was at the information desk,” says Hilda. “I enjoy helping people – especially those who maybe stressed or needing help. That is when I feel like I’m really contributing.”

Hilda has also been cross-trained to handle responsibilities at the surgical information desk for outpatients. She may be working at the front desk in the University Hospital after it opens in February 2009.

“Everyday I hear so many patients and family members tell me how appreciative they are and that the staff has been very kind, helpful and caring,” says Hilda. “That’s the best reward. When I come home after volunteering at UC Irvine Medical Center, I feel I have done something important and I’m ready to come back the next day to see what other lives I can touch.”
