REGINA HOVEY, M.D. Regina Hovey, M.D., is a urologist who specializes in incontinence, complex voiding dysfunction, urinary disorders associated with neurologic (nervous system) disease, and lower urinary tract reconstruction for pelvic prolapse and other conditions. Her research focuses on alternative therapies for neurogenic bladder problems. A leader in her field, she provides women with more medical and surgical options for urologic disease than ever before. “Incontinence affects a broad spectrum of women—up to 15 million American females of all ages and walks of life,” notes Hovey. “Many wear pads or adult diapers to cope with the condition, which never gets better on its own. Today, however, we can cure or improve 90 percent of all urinary incontinence cases.” Hovey was among the first to use the da Vinci robotic surgical system to restore weakened pelvic muscles, which frequently leads to incontinence. The da Vinci allows surgeons to operate on a minimally invasive basis with unprecedented accuracy and precision. Widely regarded as an expert in incontinence caused by spinal cord injury, she joined UC Irvine Medical Center in July 1998. Currently, she is Director of the UC Irvine Urology Residency Program, which is fully approved by the American Board of Urology. Hovey is fellowship-trained in neurology, urodynamics, and reconstructive urology. In addition, she is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology and a frequent presenter at medical society conferences. |
