Tom Wilson U.S. Postal Service Manager Tom Wilson is alive and well thanks to surgery performed at UC Irvine Medical Center. After having traditional open surgery at another institution to remove a kidney (a procedure called a radical nephrectomy), Tom suffered complications, including a blocked intestine. Further testing of his remaining kidney showed the presence of a kidney stone, a cyst, and a solid cancerous mass. Already having one 14-inch incision, Tom decided to seek out the best in minimally invasive surgery. He turned to Dr. Ralph V. Clayman at the Center for Urological Care. Dr. Clayman performed three minimally invasive procedures, removing the kidney stone, cyst and cancerous mass. Tom’s healthy kidney tissue was left intact. Tom credits the center’s urology team with allowing him to recover faster than he would have with traditional surgery. Today, Tom is back to work—and he’s giving helpful guidance to fellow employees who have cancer. |
