Surgery Services
At UC Irvine Medical Center, our surgeons work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide each patient with highly specialized individualized care. The team is prepared to deal with the full spectrum of situations requiring their skills, from accidents and traumatic injuries to acute conditions needing immediate attention. Services are based on the philosophy that when a patient is treated by a UC Irvine Medical Center surgeon, he or she has access to the expertise of the entire surgical staff. Simply stated, our surgeons espouse the principle that “When patients see one of us, they see all of us.”

Team of specialists
In addition to surgeons, every team includes experts in areas relevant to each patient’s condition, including various medical specialists, nurses, psychologists, rehabilitation therapists and social workers, as appropriate. We believe our patients deserve the best treatment possible, which can only be achieved when medical professionals work together.
As the only university hospital in Orange County, UC Irvine Medical Center provides a full spectrum of advanced surgical services, many of which are not available elsewhere in the region. Our medical center is home to the UC Irvine Regional Burn Center, as well as the county's only American College of Surgeons-verified Level I Trauma Center and National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Minimally invasive and robotic procedures
Our surgeons are skilled in many minimally invasive surgical techniques such as laparoscopy, which requires very small incisions that accommodate tiny surgical instruments. Many procedures such as gallbladder removal and bariatric (weight loss) surgery can now be performed laparoscopically. Advantages include less pain, shorter hospital stays, reduced blood loss and a faster return to normal activities.
The robotic da Vinci® Surgical System is used for certain complex and delicate operations, providing surgeons with unparalleled precision in urological, gastroenterological, cardiothoracic, vascular and gynecological procedures.
