The surgeons of UC Irvine Healthcare are part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team that provides each patient with individualized care. The team is prepared to deal with the full spectrum of situations requiring surgery — from accidents, traumatic injuries and acute conditions needing immediate attention to reconstructive, bariatric and transplant procedures.
When a patient is treated by a surgeon at UC Irvine Medical Center, he or she receives expert care from the entire surgical staff. Simply stated, our guiding principle for patients is: “When you see one of us, you see all of us.”

Team of specialists
In addition to our surgeons, every medical team includes experts in areas relevant to each patient’s condition, including various medical specialists, nurses, psychologists, rehabilitation therapists and social workers as appropriate. We believe our patients deserve the best possible treatment, which is achieved only when medical professionals work together.
Advanced services
As the only university hospital in Orange County, the medical center in Orange provides a broad range of advanced surgical services, many of which are not available elsewhere in the region. Our medical center, the county’s only Level I trauma center as verified by the American College of Surgeons, also is home to the UC Irvine Regional Burn Center and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Orange County and one of only 40 in the nation.
More than two dozen of our surgeons have repeatedly been named Best Doctors in America® in peer-reviewed lists compiled by Best Doctors Inc.
Minimally invasive and robotic procedures
UC Irvine Healthcare surgeons are skilled in many minimally invasive surgical techniques, including single-site laparoscopy, which requires very small incisions to accommodate a narrow tube fitted with tiny surgical instruments. Many procedures — including esophagectomy, hernia repair, colectomy and bariatric (weight loss) surgery — now can be performed laparoscopically. Advantages include less pain, shorter hospital stays, reduced blood loss and a faster return to normal activities.
Many of our surgeons are experts in the use of the da Vinci® Surgical System, a robotic system that allows them to perform complex and delicate operations with unparalleled precision in cardiothoracic, colorectal, gastroenterologic, gynecologic and urologic and vascular procedures. UC Irvine surgeons became the first on the West Coast to perform robotic thyroidectomies, resulting in no visible scarring for patients with thyroid tumors. Other robot-assisted procedures offered by UC Irvine Healthcare surgeons include prostatectomy, radical hysterectomy, nephrectomy, colon resection and mitral valve repair.
