Acute Care Surgery Services Overview

Acute care surgery patients at UC Irvine Medical Center benefit from having a rapid response trauma team on site with immediate access to the operating room. Led by surgeons who are board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care, UC Irvine Healthcare’s multidisciplinary team includes emergency medicine physicians, residents, critical care nurses and allied health professionals. The team also has access to many onsite subspecialists who provide valuable consultative services, ensuring that each patient receives expert individualized care at Orange County’s only Level I trauma center.

Each year, UC Irvine Healthcare surgeons treat thousands of patients with critical injuries and acute illnesses. Our acute care staff is experienced in providing immediate intervention for patients with life-threatening traumas, burns and other problems requiring surgical critical care and emergency general surgery services. Physicians are available around the clock so that patients can be examined and treated immediately.

After surgery, the acute care team supervises patients in UC Irvine Douglas Hospital’s state-of-the-art intensive care units (ICU), including a surgical ICU, a neurosurgical ICU and the burn ICU. All the ICUs have the latest monitoring equipment to ensure the best patient care.

In addition to being Orange County’s only Level I trauma center verified to meet the highest standards of the American College of Surgeon, UC Irvine is home to the UC Irvine Regional Burn Center, one of the first in the nation. The medical center is also the first in Southern California to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center able to provide emergency stroke and cerebrovascular care.

As a university medical center, UC Irvine also is involved in advancing the field of acute care medicine, including clinical research studies to improve treatment of life-threatening conditions including shock. This gives UC Irvine patients the benefit of new technologies and protocols not yet available to the general public.
