Conditions and Services

  • Burns
    Treatment for all types of burns including but not limited to scalds, chemical, electrical, flame and contact with hot objects.
  • Scar Management
    Scars are an inevitable and natural part of the healing process for most dermal wounds, UC Irvine’s burn office provides various options for management, including: surgical revision, drug therapy, pressure garments and topical interventions.
  • Reconstruction of Burns and Complex Wound Management
    Expert plastic surgeons are available to repair and reconstruct the most complicated wounds and delicate soft tissues.
  • Other conditions and diseases of the skin treated by our burn team include:
      • Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) – SJS is a serious systemic allergic reaction with a characteristic severe rash involving the skin and mucous membranes that requires treatment similar to burns.
      • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS) – TENS is a life-threatening skin disorder that is commonly drug-induced. A variant of the same disease process as SJS.
      • Bullous Pemphigoid (BP) - BP is a chronic, autoimmune, subepidermal, blistering skin disease of unknown cause that can be fatal in the most severe cases.
      • Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) – PV is a potentially life threatening autoimmune, intraepithelial, blistering disease of unknown etiology affecting the skin and mucous membranes.

  • Patient Support Services
    Discharge from the burn center is only the beginning of recovery. Our burn survivor programs are designed to heal the spirit and allow survivors to thrive emotionally and socially. Some of our services include: pediatric burn camps, SOAR (survivors offering assistance in recovery) training, school re-entry assistance, and scholarships for survivors to attend annual conferences and retreats.
