Minimally Invasive Surgery OverviewMain | Overview | Team & Expertise | Our Physicians | Conditions & Services UC Irvine Healthcare surgeons are experts in performing minimally invasive surgery (MIS) through dime-sized incisions. Instead of the 6 to 12 inch incisions used for traditional, open surgery, minimally invasive techniques require incisions of only 1 to 2 centimeters. With smaller incisions surgeons are able to treat patients while also reducing pain, blood loss, recovery times and infections. It has become the standard of care for many surgical procedures, however only skilled surgeons using the most advanced equipment can perform MIS in certain complex or delicate procedures. UC Irvine Medical Center was the first in Orange County to install the da Vinci system, which is regularly used to treat patients with urological, gastroenterological, cardiothoracic, vascular and gynecological problems, among others. Our surgeons are at the forefront of this new technology. From prostatectomy to mitral valve repair, UC Irvine’s surgeons provide patients with the most advanced MIS procedures, making surgery safer, less invasive and more effective.
