Trauma/Critical Care Surgery OverviewMain | Overview | Team & Expertise | Our Physicians | Conditions & Services Trauma is the leading cause of death in people ages 1 to 44, stealing more prime years of life than heart disease and cancer combined. Even for those who survive their injuries, trauma robs people of their productivity during extensive periods of hospitalization and rehabilitation. UC Irvine Healthcare’s trauma and critical care team has dedicated their professional lives to helping these patients. Most often traumatic injury is due to car crashes, falls, burns and other accidents. Our physicians understand the circumstances that have brought patients to our trauma center may be very difficult and unexpected. Our trauma surgeons are board-certified in surgery with added qualifications in surgical critical care. Trauma patients at UC Irvine are offered a full spectrum of care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our surgeons provide comprehensive surgical care as well as critical intensive care unit care and ongoing non-operative management. UC Irvine also offers full rehabilitation services and ongoing outpatient care after discharge. With the only Level I trauma center in Orange County, UC Irvine Medical Center provides the most advanced trauma care available to adults and children who have sustained life-threatening injuries. The center is verified by the American College of Surgeons and thus meets the highest standards of trauma care in the nation. UC Irvine also has the only surgical residency and trauma/critical care fellowship in Orange County and is at the forefront of trauma research in a number of areas.
