University of California, Irvine has built a state-of-the-art hospital at UC Irvine Medical Center, located in Orange, Calif. UC Irvine Douglas Hospital replaces a structure built in 1960 and links to the existing University Hospital Tower. The new hospital, which opened its doors in March 2009, combines the latest medical technologies with patient comforts and strengthens UC Irvine Healthcare’s ability to deliver the most advanced therapies and treatments.
UC Irvine Douglas Hospital is a spacious, well-lighted seven-story building offering private rooms designed for optimal patient comfort and healing. UC Irvine Healthcare physicians, nurses and other medical professionals are committed to delivering the highest quality care and fostering medical breakthroughs through research and education at Orange County’s only university hospital and Level I trauma center.
Site Location:UC Irvine Douglas Hospital is visible from the Santa Ana (Interstate 5) and Garden Grove (State Route 22) freeways. It is located at the north end of the medical center campus, parallel to Chapman Avenue. The main entrance is on Medical Center Drive off The City Drive, one block south of Chapman Avenue.
Timeline: Construction of the hospital began in February 2005. Phase I was completed in September 2008 and Phase II will be finished at the end of 2011.
Budget: The cost of construction and equipment for both phases totals $555.9 million.

- 236 beds, bringing the total number of licensed beds at UC Irvine Medical Center to 422, including the University Hospital Tower and the Neuropsychiatric Center1

- State-of-the-art burn unit with eight beds
- 15 high-tech operating rooms that are 50 percent larger than those in the former hospital2
- Two dedicated cardiac catheterization suites
- Conference rooms and collaborative work spaces for residents on each patient care floor
Hospital Layout:
- Basement — state-of-the-art radiology services, including fluoroscopy, CT, MRI and X-ray
- Ground Level — main lobby, admissions office, pharmacy, rehabilitation therapy, supply, processing and distribution, materiel management, dining room, gift shop, chapel, meditation and prayer room
- Level Two — operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, preoperative rooms, postoperative recovery rooms, visitor lounge, bridge to University Hospital Tower
- Level Three — blood bank, rapid response laboratories, anatomic pathology, 15-bed medical/surgical unit, orthopaedics, nursing administration
- Level Four — neonatal intensive care unit, women’s services
- Level Five — burn intensive care unit, neuroscience units, including epilepsy monitoring
- Level Six — surgical intensive care unit, Institute for Clinical and Translational Studies (ICTS)
- Level Seven — cardiac care unit, adult intensive care unit, oncology, telemetry
