UC Irvine has led the nation in burn care with advanced surgical techniques, innovations in synthetic skin treatments and expert patient care. In fact, the UC Irvine Regional Burn Center is one of the few burn centers in the nation verified by the American College of Surgeons and it serves as the primary educational resource for burn care in Orange County.
In the new UC Irvine Douglas Hospital, burn care specialists will be able to continue to deliver high quality care to patients in a comfortable, healing environment. The burn intensive care unit (ICU) will feature more spacious rooms, which are equipped with daybeds so family members and friends may visit with their loved ones and participate in their recovery. In addition, the burn ICU will expand from six to eight rooms, allowing more patients to receive specialized care.
Conveniently located in the unit is a spacious hydrotherapy room with two state-of-the-art tubs. Hydrotherapy uses warm, running water to help the healing process of a burn injury by reducing infection and relieving pain. The new hydrotherapy tubs will include features such as doors for easy entry, whirlpools and automated elevation, allowing caregivers to move the tub up and down as needed to better access the patients’ wounds and dressings. A third tub, located on the first floor, will be dedicated to physical therapy.
