Ranked in U.S. News and World Report as one of the America’s Best Hospitals for geriatric care for the past two years, UC Irvine offers the most comprehensive care for seniors in Orange County. It is one of the few facilities in the U.S. to have 11 board-certified geriatricians – physicians with specialized training in caring for older adults.
UC Irvine Douglas Hospital, which opened in March 2009, has been designed to meet the medical and emotional needs of our patients, including our older patients. The support of family and loved ones is critical to the healing process. In the new hospital, our senior patients will benefit from spacious mostly private rooms with daybeds, making it comfortable for family members who need to stay overnight with their loved one. This may be especially comforting to seniors who are struggling with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition, older patients admitted to the hospital may be followed by our geriatric hospitalists. A hospitalist coordinates the care of the patient during a hospital stay. Board-certified in internal and geriatric medicine, geriatric hospitalists are specially trained to ensure that treatments and medications are appropriate for older patients.
