Patients with serious neurological conditions are cared for in state-of-the-art intensive care units on the fifth floor of UC Irvine Douglas Hospital, which opened in March 2009 at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County’s only Level I trauma center.
UC Irvine Healthcare neurologists care for the most critically affected patients in the neurosciences intensive care unit, with additional beds reserved for people being treated for brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, movement disorders, spinal cord injuries and neuromuscular diseases.
Aided by the latest imaging technologies, UC Irvine top stroke specialists deliver leading-edge diagnostic and treatment services at Orange County’s only university hospital, where ongoing clinical studies give patients access to potentially breakthrough approaches. Patients with brain and spinal cord conditions are treated through individualized approaches using radiation therapy, chemotherapy or minimally invasive surgery. Patients in the hospital’s state-of-the-art epilepsy monitoring unit receive highly specialized care aimed at gaining control of their seizures.
The hospital also provides inpatient care for people seen at UC Irvine Medical Center’s ALS and Neuromuscular Center. The center’s clinicians diagnose and treat chronic, debilitating neurological conditions, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis.
