College Student | Volunteer Services

UC Irvine Healthcare’s college volunteer program is designed for current college students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. Students planning to attend medical or graduate school fall under the college volunteer program.

What are the requirements to volunteer? You must be at least 18 years old and be available to volunteer for one three-hour shift each week between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. You must be able to commit to a minimum of 100 service hours. You must also pass a general health clearance and pass a criminal background check.

What volunteer opportunities are open to college students? Our college volunteers work in several areas:

  • Greeters/customer service
  • Administrative support
  • Dispatch
  • Transport
  • Emergency room
  • Nursing units
  • Cancer center
  • Child life
  • We do not have pharmacy volunteer physicians

Can I choose the department or area where I want to volunteer? Volunteers must complete a minimum of 35 hours in the dispatch area of the volunteer office. This will help you become knowledgeable about the hospital and medical center. After completing this requirement, you may apply for a position in other areas open to college students. Transfers to patient care areas (emergency and nursing units) are based upon performance and attendance.

What does the health clearance involve? Each volunteer must pass two tuberculosis skin tests and show proof of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox. The TB skin test can be performed at the medical center at no cost.

What skills or experience do volunteers need? The most important requirement to be a volunteer is a friendly, customer-focused attitude. You do not need medical or clinical experience. A willingness to serve, give back to your community and be helpful and caring are the traits of a successful volunteer. Excellent communication skills are required.

How do I apply? You may fill out an online application below. Applications are reviewed on a monthly basis. The college student volunteer program is very popular and highly competitive. We have limited space and cannot take every applicant who applies to the program. When volunteers are needed, applicants are selected based on their availability, skills, background and the thoroughness of their application. Applicants selected to move forward in the volunteer process will be notified.
