Neuropsychiatric Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program
In addition to inpatient services, the center offers a Neuropsychiatric Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program. This outpatient program provides intensive, individualized help in a safe environment to pre-teens and teenagers (ages 12 to 18) whose emotional and behavioral problems are interfering with their ability to function at home, in school and in the community.
The program’s multidisciplinary team of board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, nurses and social workers provide the most advanced expertise and compassionate care to help adolescents who are struggling with potentially life-threatening eating disorders, depression and anxiety, as well as bipolar and psychotic disorders. Youths learning to cope with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or a dual diagnosis also are candidates for this program.
Program hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays in the Neuropsychiatric Center at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.
Patients receive daily individual and group therapy as well assistance with schoolwork by a specialized instructor. With this schedule, adolescents receive the focused attention they require during the day and return to the familiarity of their home setting in the evening.
Program goals:
Each patient’s needs are identified through communication between the treatment team, the teen and family members. The overarching objective is to help improve the teen’s ability to:
- Communicate effectively and relate constructively with others
- Manage emotions and moods
- Control impulses and at-risk behaviors
- Develop and increase the quality of relationships with family members, peers and others
- Improve attendance and performance at school
The program also is designed to ease an adolescent’s transition home from an inpatient setting and to decrease the risk of relapse. Patients who are not yet ready to return to the pressures of school or work environment receive specialized supervision and individualized therapy plans. The team works closely with families and professionals to help ensure a supportive transition back to school and the community.
